Plumber in Freeling

North-west of the valley · Light Regional

Craig is a licensed plumber and gas fitter who works through Freeling and the farms around it, from a blocked line to the septic tank to a new hot water system or a tank pump that has given up.

Septic tanks and the Freeling CWMS

Freeling is one of five townships where Light Regional Council runs a Community Wastewater Management System (CWMS). In most of the town that means each house has its own septic tank, and the tank drains into the council network rather than a soakage trench.

Two sections of town, Freeling Estate and Schuster Estate, are on sewer connections instead. Council also books a pump-out of CWMS septic tanks every four years, and Freeling’s areas are on its schedule for 2026, 2027 and 2028.

We don’t pump tanks out ourselves. What Craig looks after is the plumbing either side of the tank: blocked or broken lines from the house, cracked junctions, overflowing inspection points and new connections when a house is extended or rebuilt.

The township and the farm country

Around the town centre

Older homes and newer estates

Freeling was surveyed in 1860 and grew up as a hay and farm-machinery town, so it has a mix of older houses near the centre and newer homes on the estates. The older ones are where tired pipework, root-blocked drains and worn-out hot water units turn up.

On the newer streets it is more often a dishwasher or fridge line, a gas point for the BBQ or a hot water unit that can’t keep up with the family.

Out on the farms

Tanks, pumps, long water lines

Beyond the CWMS area, properties look after their own water and wastewater. Craig connects new rainwater tanks, replaces pressure pumps, fits filters and UV for drinking water and repairs septic systems.

Gas out here is usually bottled LPG, and Craig works on that as well as natural gas, under licence PGE341299.

Looking after a CWMS septic tank

On a CWMS, everything that goes down the sink, shower and toilet passes through your own septic tank before it reaches the council network. A few habits keep that tank and the pipes to it working.

Keep wet wipes, sanitary items and paper towel out of the toilet, even the “flushable” kind. Scrape fat and food scraps into the bin rather than down the sink. Go easy on harsh chemicals and bleach. And keep the tank lids uncovered and clear of garden beds, so the tank can be reached when council comes to pump it out.

If the drains still slow down or the toilet starts to gurgle, ring Craig before it backs up. A blocked line is much easier to clear before it overflows.

Freeling FAQs

Is Freeling on sewer or septic?

Mostly a septic tank connected to Light Regional Council’s CWMS. Freeling Estate and Schuster Estate use sewer connections. Farms outside the township have their own onsite systems.

Do you pump out septic tanks?

No. We don’t have a pump-out truck. Light Regional Council schedules CWMS tank pump-outs every four years. Craig repairs the pipes, fittings and tanks themselves.

Sewage is coming up in the yard. Who do I call?
