Complete septic system installation

A reliable septic system starts with understanding your property: soil conditions, household wastewater, available land and access to existing infrastructure all shape the right solution. Our installation service includes:

  • Arranging a wastewater engineer’s site inspection and soil assessment.
  • Coordinating the system design and supporting documents.
  • Managing the council wastewater approval application.
  • Planning tank locations, drainage routes and excavation access.
  • Coordinating excavation and tank installation.
  • Installing plumbing and drainage connections.
  • Installing soakage trenches and effluent distribution to the approved design.

How a septic installation runs

  1. Site and soil assessment

We arrange a wastewater engineer to inspect the site and assess the soil.

  2. Design

The engineer designs a system to suit your ground, space and wastewater needs.

  3. Council approval

We manage the application. Nothing is dug until it’s approved.

  4. Excavation

Our trusted local contractors dig the tank hole and trenches, with Craig on site to set the levels.

  5. Tank, plumbing and irrigation

The tank goes in, the house is connected and the disposal or irrigation area is installed to the approved design.

  6. Inspection and handover

Required inspections are coordinated and you get practical handover information.

Septic systems suited to Barossa and Gawler soils

Soil varies a lot across the Barossa, Gawler and surrounding districts: sandy soils, sand over clay, red-brown earths, cracking clays and shallow soils over rock. A system that works well on one property may not suit the block next door, so we arrange a property-specific site and soil assessment with a wastewater engineer.

  • Clay and slowly draining soils Clay-rich ground can slow how quickly effluent moves through the soil. The engineer assesses its capacity and sets a suitable treatment system and land application area. Slow ground may need a different disposal arrangement or a larger area. A bigger septic tank alone doesn’t fix unsuitable soil.
  • Sandy soil and sand over clay Sandy topsoil doesn’t always mean the whole profile drains freely. A clay layer underneath can restrict drainage, while more permeable sandy profiles need careful thought about groundwater protection. Checking below the surface picks up conditions that affect long-term performance.
  • Shallow or rocky ground Shallow soil and rock underneath affect excavation, tank positioning and the space available for treatment and disposal. Finding these conditions early makes for a practical installation plan.
  • Sloping blocks and seasonally wet areas Slope, runoff, winter wetness and groundwater all influence where a system goes and how it performs. Your engineer weighs these alongside setbacks from buildings, boundaries and water sources, and we install the approved solution.

Septic and wastewater system options

  • Conventional septic tank and soakage trenches The tank separates settled solids and floating material from the liquid, which then flows to an approved underground soakage area where the soil treats and absorbs it. It needs suitable ground and enough space, and the tank and soakage area are designed together.
  • Aerated wastewater treatment systems (AWTS) Also called aerobic systems, these give extra treatment beyond a conventional tank. Depending on the approved design, treated effluent goes to a designated irrigation area or another approved land application system. They need ongoing servicing. We coordinate the treatment unit, drainage, irrigation and electrical work.
  • Sand filter systems An aerobic sand filter adds a designed sand filtration stage to further treat septic tank effluent before approved disposal or reuse. Your engineer may consider it depending on your site and treatment needs.
  • CWMS connections Some properties are on a Community Wastewater Management System. In a septic tank effluent scheme the property keeps its tank while liquid effluent flows to the community system. We help establish whether you need onsite disposal or a connection before planning the job.

Wastewater irrigation installation

Where the approved design uses treated effluent for irrigation, the irrigation area is an essential part of the system.

Piper Plumbing & Gas installs wastewater irrigation to the wastewater engineer’s specifications and the council approval conditions, following the approved layout: the nominated irrigation area, pipework, distribution method and associated equipment.

We coordinate the irrigation with the treatment system and any pumping or electrical work, so every part of the installation works together as designed. For other irrigation work, see irrigation lines.

Council approvals and engineering coordination

Installing, altering, connecting or decommissioning a wastewater system needs the relevant wastewater works approval. The approval authority depends on where the property is and the system’s capacity. We manage the application for you, coordinating the engineer’s report, plumbing plans and supporting documents, then install to the approved design and conditions.

  • The Barossa Council Williamstown, Lyndoch, Tanunda, Nuriootpa, Angaston, Mount Pleasant, Springton, Eden Valley and the blocks around them. Applications go through council’s Health Services team.
  • Light Regional Council Freeling, Greenock, Kapunda, Roseworthy and the farms around them. Council approves wastewater applications, and notes that existing septic tanks can’t be converted to a sewer system.
  • Town of Gawler Gawler, including the parts of Evanston and Gawler East that rely on onsite systems. Council approves the system, and the licensed plumber does the work to that approval.
  • Adelaide Hills Council Kersbrook and the hills blocks around it.

Septic tank replacements and wastewater upgrades

An existing system may need assessing when you’re renovating, adding accommodation or dealing with recurring drainage problems. Signs worth investigating:

  • Persistent sewage odours.
  • Wastewater backing up into toilets, showers or other fixtures.
  • Repeated drainage blockages.
  • Wet or unusually lush patches around the disposal area.
  • Effluent appearing at ground level.

These don’t automatically mean the whole system needs replacing. We investigate the plumbing and drainage, including a drain camera inspection where it helps, and coordinate further assessment where needed. Planning an extension or extra bathrooms? We can arrange an assessment of whether your system can handle it.

What affects septic installation costs?

  • The treatment system and tank capacity.
  • Soil conditions and any rock excavation.
  • Access for excavation equipment and tank delivery.
  • The distance between the building, tank and disposal area.
  • The size and type of soakage or irrigation system.
  • Pumping and electrical requirements.
  • Engineering, approvals and inspections.
  • Replacing or decommissioning existing infrastructure.

We use the site assessment and approved design to prepare a clear quote outlining the installation scope.

Servicing the Barossa, Gawler and surrounding areas

Septic tank installation and wastewater solutions throughout these areas, plus Kapunda, Freeling, Greenock, Kersbrook and Cockatoo Valley:

Septic installation questions

Do you install new septic systems?

Yes. We manage the whole job: arranging the wastewater engineer’s site inspection and soil assessment, the council approval application, and coordinating the excavation with trusted local contractors, the plumbing, any wastewater irrigation and required electrical work.

Who does the digging?

Trusted local excavation contractors we work with. Craig is on site to set the levels and does all of the plumbing.

Do I need council approval for a new septic system?

Yes. Installing, altering, connecting or decommissioning a wastewater system needs the relevant wastewater works approval. We manage the application on your behalf, coordinating the engineer’s report, plumbing plans and supporting documents.

Will a bigger septic tank fix clay or slow-draining soil?

No. A larger tank alone does not resolve unsuitable soil conditions. The wastewater engineer assesses the soil and determines a suitable treatment system and land application area for your property.

Do you install aerobic (AWTS) systems and wastewater irrigation?

Yes. We coordinate installation of the treatment unit, associated drainage, wastewater irrigation and any required electrical work. Irrigation is installed to the wastewater engineer’s specifications and the council approval conditions.

Can you replace a septic system that has failed?

Yes. Symptoms like odours or backing up don’t automatically mean the whole system needs replacing. We investigate the plumbing and drainage, coordinate further assessment where needed, and organise a replacement or upgrade if that’s the right answer, approvals included.

Do you pump out septic tanks?

No. We don’t have a pump-out truck. Craig installs, repairs and replaces systems, and a pump-out contractor or your council’s CWMS schedule looks after desludging.

Which areas do you install septic systems in?

The Barossa and Barossa Valley, Gawler, Angaston, Nuriootpa, Tanunda, Lyndoch, Williamstown, Springton, Eden Valley, Birdwood and the rural properties around them, as well as Kapunda, Freeling, Greenock, Kersbrook, Cockatoo Valley and Sandy Creek.
