Hot water across the Barossa
One local plumber, Williamstown to Kapunda
Hot water in the Barossa isn’t quite the same job as in Adelaide. Winter nights are colder, plenty of homes run on rainwater and bottled gas, and the nearest plumber can be half an hour away. This page brings it together, town by town.
No hot water right now? Ring 0499 319 297.
Three things that make Barossa hot water different
Cold nights
The Bureau of Meteorology’s Nuriootpa station averages a July low of about 4.6°C and has recorded frosts below minus 5. Colder incoming water means more hot water per shower, and some heat pumps are built for it better than others.
Rainwater
Off the mains, the pressure pump feeds the hot water. A weak pump can make a gas continuous-flow unit cut in and out, so the pump and heater get checked together.
Bottled gas
Natural gas doesn’t reach every property, so many homes run on LPG bottles. When a bottle empties the hot water stops, unless there’s an automatic changeover.

Start with what the house already has
The first question isn’t which brand or which size. It’s what your property already has at the gate and on the roof.
- Natural gas at the street: a gas continuous-flow unit is hard to beat for a busy household.
- LPG bottles only: continuous flow still works well, or a heat pump takes the bottle deliveries out of the hot water bill.
- Solar panels on the roof: a heat pump or smart electric unit on a daytime timer can run largely off your own power.
- No gas and no solar: a heat pump is usually the cheapest to run. Pick one rated for cold climates.
- Guests, teenagers or a big family: size for the busiest hour of the day, not the average.

Barossa hot water questions
Do you do hot water repairs everywhere in the Barossa?
Yes. Craig covers the whole valley, from Williamstown and Lyndoch up through Tanunda and Nuriootpa to Angaston, Greenock, Kapunda and Freeling, plus Mount Pleasant, Springton, Kersbrook, Gawler and Roseworthy.
Is there a hot water plumber based in the Barossa?
Yes. Piper Plumbing & Gas is based in Williamstown SA 5351, at the southern end of the Barossa. Craig is a master-qualified plumber and licensed gas fitter (LIC PGE341299).
What hot water system is best for a Barossa home?
It depends on what the house already has. A heat pump is usually the cheapest to run, especially with solar panels, but pick a model built for cold nights. Gas continuous flow suits a busy house on gas. Our heat pump page and the heat pump, gas or solar guide go into more detail.
Can you come out if we have no hot water?
Yes. No hot water is one of the jobs Craig treats as urgent. Ring 0499 319 297 to explain what’s happened and check availability. How soon he can get there depends on where you are and what he’s already on.
Do you install and repair solar hot water?
Yes, both. Craig repairs the panels, pipework, tank and booster on solar systems, and installs new solar, heat pump, gas and electric systems.
How do I get a quote for a new hot water system?
Email a photo of the label on your current unit (make and model) to hello@piperplumbing.au, or use the quote form. Tell us your town and how many people live there.
