Septic, wastewater & CWMS plumbing

Not every property in the Barossa Valley is connected to mains sewer. Many rural and regional properties rely on septic tanks, onsite wastewater systems or Community Wastewater Management Systems (CWMS).

Piper Plumbing & Gas provides plumbing for septic and wastewater systems, including repairs, replacements, upgrades and CWMS connections. Where required, Craig can also coordinate wastewater engineering, system design and approvals on your behalf.

Septic or sewer?

Knowing which one you're on helps when something goes wrong. Craig works on both, and on CWMS connections.

On septic or aerobic

Waste goes to a tank on your property. Common on rural blocks.
  • Smells or soggy ground over the tank or the trenches.
  • Slow drains or gurgling right through the house.
  • The alarm going off on an aerobic system.
  • A pump that has stopped on a pump-out system.

On mains sewer or CWMS

Waste runs away to the sewer main or a community wastewater network.
  • Roots in the line, the usual culprit in older yards.
  • An overflowing gully in the yard.
  • Cracked or sagging pipe where the ground has moved.
  • Blockages that keep coming back. See blocked drains.

Septic, wastewater and CWMS questions

What is the difference between a septic system and CWMS?

A septic system generally manages wastewater on your own property, through a septic tank and an onsite disposal system. A CWMS (Community Wastewater Management System) uses a community wastewater network to collect wastewater from the connected properties. The requirements and responsibilities can vary depending on the local system.

How do I know if my septic system needs attention?

Look for slow drains, recurring blockages, sewage smells, gurgling pipes, wastewater backing up, or unusually wet areas around the septic system. These problems shouldn't be ignored.

Can a blocked drain affect my septic or CWMS system?

It can. Blocked or damaged wastewater pipework can restrict the flow of wastewater and cause drainage problems. The blockage needs to be found to tell whether the issue is in the property's plumbing or further along the wastewater system.

Does a septic system need regular maintenance?

Yes. Septic systems need appropriate maintenance to keep working well. How often depends on the type and size of the system, how much the household uses, and the manufacturer's or system provider's requirements.

Who is responsible for a CWMS problem?

It depends on where the fault is and the rules of the particular CWMS. Plumbing within the property and the property connection may be the property owner’s responsibility, while other parts of the network may be managed by the local council or CWMS operator.

Do you service rural properties?

Yes. Piper Plumbing & Gas provides rural plumbing throughout the Barossa Valley and surrounding areas, including septic, wastewater, CWMS and general plumbing work.
