Systems Craig installs

The four types Craig fits most often. The photos are from his own jobs.

  • Gas storage hot water system installed against a brick wall

    Gas storage

A tank of hot water ready to go that heats back up quickly. A simple swap when the old one gives out.

  • Continuous-flow gas hot water unit mounted on a brick wall

    Gas continuous flow

Heats water as you use it, so a busy house doesn't run out. It hangs on the wall, which frees up space too.

  • Smart electric hot water storage tank installed outside a brick house

    Electric and smart electric

The easy choice where there's no gas. Smart models can heat on off-peak power or your own solar.

  • Heat pump hot water system installed beside a house

    Heat pump

Draws warmth from the air to heat the tank, and uses far less power than a standard electric unit.

Repair or replace?

Plenty of hot water problems come down to one part. This is roughly how Craig decides.

Worth repairing

Usually a single part
  • A dripping or stuck relief valve. Common, and usually a cheap part.
  • A thermostat or element gone on an electric unit.
  • A pilot light that won't stay lit, or ignition trouble on a gas unit.
  • Water too hot or too cold at the taps. Often the tempering valve.
  • A younger system having its first problem.

Time to replace

When repairs stop making sense
  • The tank itself is leaking. Once a cylinder rusts through it can't be patched.
  • The same old unit keeps breaking down. That repair money is better put towards a new one.
  • You run out every day. The system is too small for the household now.
  • Rusty or discoloured hot water coming from an older tank.

Either way, you'll know the price before any work starts.

Hot water questions

My hot water's stopped. What should I check first?

On an electric unit, check the switchboard for a tripped circuit. On gas, check whether the pilot light is out. If it's leaking or still not working, ring Craig and tell him what you can see.

Which system suits my house?

It comes down to whether you've got gas, how many people live there, whether there's solar on the roof, and your budget. Craig will explain the options and price them.

Can you install gas hot water?

Yes. Craig is a licensed gas fitter (LIC PGE341299), so the gas, the water and the compliance certificate are all done by him.

Can you come out after hours?

Yes. No hot water is one of the jobs Craig treats as urgent, so ring 0499 319 297 any time.
